TRADITION

what is developed and persisted over the years

 

1 September - academic year opening act

The ceremony takes place at Türi Song Festival Grounds, where the 1st grade students get handed an ABC Book. The event begins with a parade from the school to the music stadium. All students and teachers attend. There are musical performances on stage, speeches are given, the 1st grade children and class teachers are congratulated. There is also a 1st and 9th grade photo shooting afterwards.

Sports days (in autumn, spring).

Sports days take place up to two times a year. The students compete in four different competitions (400m run, 60m run, ball throwing, long jump). The students will be acknowledged later with diplomas at the students gathering.

St Matthew’s day race - an inter-class relay race

The relay race takes place around Türi Artificial Lake in the evening. A team with 8 members participate (5 girls and 3 boys) from 4th-9th grade. The participants have a flashlight as a baton. The dusk and running in any weather is what makes it have good spirits. The teachers team also participates. Türi Basic School is a health promoting school.

Sügiseit - to celebrate the beginning of autumn

Elementary school students get visited by the Sügiseit in the beginning of autumn, who will tell them about the changes in nature that the upcoming autumn will bring. They also play games.

Reflector inspection (multiple times a year)

The student council checks the reflector on the teachers and students in the morning. Those who don’t have the reflectors will be marked down and given reflectors.

Teachers’ day - the power is given to the 9th grade “directorate”

9th grade students give 4 subject lessons to all classes throughout the day and prepare a ceremony for the teachers. There will also be a new head of school, head of extra curricular and deputy head. The students also give lessons to the teachers.

Quiz show series

1st-9th grade students take part in a quiz show once a month. There are 4 members in a team (members can be switched) and you have to bring an electronic device.

TASKA - recycling week (the time is not determined)

Every class has the task to craft something new from the given materials on TASKA week. There’s crafting workrooms, exhibitions, a fashion show of recycled materials. The whole school is involved. TASKA has also gotten a high Republican recognition in 2016 for Keskkonnakäpp 2016.

Family day - common sport competitions, quizzes for families

Mostly happens on Father’s Day in November.

The parents and children have to solve different tasks on Family Day, which are related to exercise, skills and knowledge. There is also a school concert. Fathers, mothers and grandparents are welcome.

Creative project conference

9th grade students introduce creative projects to the 8th grade students.

Christmas week

Advent mornings, Christmas fair, Christmas parties, Christmas concert in the church.

Christmas fair

All students have the possibility to sell homemade goods. The fair supports the direction of the school’s entrepreneurial activity. You can sell homemade cakes, crafts, cards or also do a lottery, charity. The student council will also run its own cafe to support its activities and the school paper will also be sold by that time (appears twice a year). The TORE organization also offers free workrooms at the Christmas fair.

Church concert

Türi Basic School’s church concert takes place in Türi church before Christmas, where our school’s singers, instrumentalists and teachers’ choir perform. The concert is free and everyone’s welcome. The concert is Türi school’s long term tradition and always brings the church full of people.

Christmas parties

Christmas parties are for the whole school family, where Santa’s not missing from. Christmas songs are sung together. There will also be Advent mornings in the hall and in the classrooms.

ABC Book party

When the 1st grade students have finished the ABC book, then there is a party for them, which is carried out by 9th grade students.

School dance - an inter-class competition with creative choreography

All classes think of dance choreography and together they have a big party at the Türi Cultural Center, where the dances will be presented. The dances have to be self-made. The theme of the year is also given sometimes. (2018 - Estonian songs, 2019 - movie music)

Anniversary of the Republic

There’s a festive ceremony in the school. Türi Music School visits with musical performances, speeches are given.

Our school week

Our school week also celebrates Valentine’s Day and the keyword for the week is: “This is our school and only we can make it more fun and friendly”. Inter-class activities take place (“Kes aias” dance), style days, friend mailboxes and different workrooms are open. Our school week is a little different every year. It’s organized by the student council and the TORE organization.

Reading night

8th grade students organize a reading night as their creative project, where they stay the night in the school and make late night reading rooms and discuss what they have read. The exciting part is staying late at night in the school.

The school’s singing competition

The school’s singing competition is a preliminary round to the Türi singing competition. Everyone who wishes to participate can. Primary classes have a separate preliminary round because of a lot of participaters. Ranks are given: nightingale, lark and others.

Spring concert

Türi Spring concert takes place in Türi Cultural Center, where there will be singers, reciters, dancers, actors etc performing. All parents and grandparents are welcome. The event is targeted for the community.

“Õiesadu” gala evening

Acknowledging the school’s best athletes, learners, singers, actors, artisans, word artists, artists with a reward “suur õis” and “väike õis”.

Final school bell or tutipidu

The final school day for 9th grade students, where they can feel like 1st graders again. They visit their 1st grade teachers in their first class. There will then be a choice for the 9th grade to go to their favourite classes and then there will be a ceremony for the teachers and 9th graders from the 8th graders. The 8th graders give a speech and wish good luck on the exams.

The reception of the deputy head and head of school

A school recognition event, where parents and students, who have all A’s on the certificate are invited. All students get a school souvenir, a concert takes place.

Ceremonies

Ceremonies take place at the end of every semester, where academic success will be pointed out for every class, acknowledged will be the best. Activities will be introduced in the meantime (student projects etc).

Commencement

The commencement for the 9th grade takes place in Türi Cultural Center. There are 9th graders on the stage, speeches and school-leaving certificates are given. 8th grade takes over the guarding of the school flag. Türi Rotary Club gives prizes to the best, the governor gives a speech, parents’ representatives and school-leaving students also do.

Gatherings (every month)

During the gatherings, students are acknowledged for their different achievements during the month. (eg Olympiads, sport competitions etc.)

Project Day

It’s a school day organized by students, where the student council has found interesting visitors or the student council members carry out their own workrooms. The teachers accompany the groups as helpers that day. During the same period, the student council organize interesting workrooms for the 1st school stage between grades 1 and 3 to get an experience as leaders.

Õiepäev

A free and creative day dedicated to the school’s symbolism, where the whole school will be divided into flower named groups, different workrooms take place, visitors perform, a school song “Olen teel” will be sung together and a picture will be taken outside of the whole school family in the shape of a flower. The first Õiepäev happened in spring of 2018.

Ferdinand

The tradition began in 2008 from the time of Türi Gymnasium. The classes will be given a so-called year theme and the class will make a self-made film on the given subject. The film competition’s purpose is to give the classes the opportunity to collaborate, the film will also be a historical record from the school time. There is a collective movie watching. The audience’s favourite will receive a prize, the best actor or operator will be pointed out. The tradition’s initiator was Aili Avi and the TORE organization. The film competition was named after the school street (Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann). The competition doesn’t take place every year.
